On the Greenbook podcast, Bob Fawson, the CEO and co-founder of Data Quality Co-op (DQC), sat down with Lenny Murphy to discuss the current state of the data quality industry and the vital role DQC is playing in driving much-needed transparency and trust. Bob shared about his 20-year journey in the market research industry, and dug into the tough issues facing our industry today.

The Importance of Transparency in Data Quality

Bob explained how Data Quality Co-op was born out of a desire to solve two critical challenges in the data quality space: buyers often struggle to assess the quality of data before making a purchase, and sellers face difficulty proving the value of their data. "We’re trying to build a business that provides transparency to quality and helps both buyers and sellers make better decisions," Bob said. This focus on transparency is key to enabling informed decisions that ultimately improve the quality of insights produced from market research.

Going Beyond Fraud Detection

While other fraud detection tools available in the marketplace are valuable, Bob emphasized that there’s a larger, often overlooked problem to address: the coordination of data quality signals. He pointed out that quality checks like speeding tests or open-end evaluations often go unexamined after they are logged into data tables. DQC provides a more holistic approach with their platform, aggregating these signals to give a clearer picture of data quality across suppliers. "What we’re doing is providing tools to make more informed decisions about procurement," Bob explained. "Are you buying from a source that consistently overdelivers on your quality expectations?"

Differentiating Data Sources & Supplier Empowerment

During the Greenbook interview with Lenny, Bob also addressed the challenges suppliers face in differentiating their data quality. He sees tremendous value in giving suppliers access to insights about how their sample performs in client surveys. "A supplier should be able to see how their sample performs inside the surveys at the agency buyers," he said, adding that this visibility can help suppliers refine their approach and build stronger relationships with clients. This empowerment, in turn, promotes trust and growth within the ecosystem.

The Role of AI in Data Quality

As AI continues to reshape industries, Bob and Lenny touched on how it might influence the future of data quality. He sees AI as a tool that could help further refine data inputs, especially as digital qualitative (qual) research scales. However, Bob cautioned that the focus should remain on evaluating the inputs, not just the outputs. "As AI grows, we need to ensure that the training data sets we use are of high quality," Bob said. His optimism stems from the idea that, as AI models become more advanced, we’ll increasingly need data we can trust to inform those models.

During the podcast conversation, Bob compared the data industry to commodity markets like wheat, where data is sold and traded based on its quality and intended use. He believes the data industry should embrace a similar mindset: "What am I trying to build with that input? Do I want the organic, low moisture content, high protein content, or am I trying to confirm something that I’m not quite sure about?" This analogy highlights the need for a more granular approach to understanding the quality of data sources and making decisions based on the purpose of the research.

Key Takeaways

As Bob and Lenny wrapped up the CEO series Greenbook podcast episode, Bob got a chance to share some key life lessons from his career. "Humility, confidence, and patience," he said, were central to his professional growth. He also emphasized the importance of continually learning from others, even as one advances in their career. For anyone in the industry, Bob’s advice resonates strongly: "Don’t be scared to acquire new skills. If you're new to the industry, take the time to learn, and don’t be afraid to ask for help."
